Equality Michigan has joined other domestic violence and victim - TopicsExpress

Equality Michigan has joined other domestic violence and victim advocacy organizations around Michigan in calling on Governor Snyder to veto Senate Bill 789. The bill that won final legislative approval during the lame-duck session, would allow a person who is subject to a personal protection order for domestic violence or stalking to obtain a concealed pistol license, unless a judge explicitly prohibits the individual from possessing or purchasing a gun. Statement by Yvonne Siferd, Esq. - Director of Victim Services for Equality Michigan “Senate Bill 789 would unnecessarily further endanger the lives of victims of domestic violence and stalking in Michigan. Introducing a gun into a domestic violence situation increases the chances five times that there will be elevated violence. The law already accounts for these risk concerns, and this portion of the law should not be changed. We cannot understand why the Michigan Legislature would want to put the lives of victims at higher risk and join our colleagues in calling on Governor Snyder to veto Senate Bill 798.”
