Equality of PG seats with UG seats in medicine in India This is the demand of our young medico friends. Is it possible? While graduates in medicine in India are in excess, there is a dearth of specialists and super specialists in the country. How can this problem be solved? 1) In most of the govt. colleges, seats were allocated many years ago. Their no. has remained stagnant because they do not grease palms like the private colleges. The OPD and inpatient has increased manifold in these govt. colleges. Seats can be easily increased here. 2) Allow teachers teaching in one college to teach in other colleges as well. They can draw salary from more than one college. This is true for other fields like MBA etc, then why not for medicine. 3) Foreign doctors’ esp. NRIs/PIOs can also be allowed to teach in Indian hospitals. If the doctors are from USA, UK, Australia, Singapore where the standard of medicine is good and the doctors know English, no test need be taken if they are board certified. For doctor from other countries, a test may be conducted for grant of license. 4) Allow retired teachers to teach as well. They can not hold any administrative position. 5) Any hospital that has a large OPD and inpatient attendance should be allowed to induct PG students. There are a lot of capable senior doctors who do not have formal teaching experience but are very good. This pool can also be tapped. 6) A large number of students can do PG in family Medicine. The field is practically non existent in India. It can be made mandatory to do PG before license to practice is given as in USA, UK etc. 7) A no. of seats can also be created in biotechnology meant esp. for doctors. The doctors will have the incentive to start their own companies.
