Erf 81 and the city council: working in the film industry has developed - to an almost psychotic level, my ability to find objects, people and information. The Mission is often simply a socially acceptable - because functional, useful - outlet for O.C.D. behaviour. These skills have also served me well over the years in various battles with the city council and other officialdoms. My last major conflict was with the council over the persistent clogging of City Bowl water supplies by a micro-organism. Although all plumbers and waterworks workers that I was able to contact were familiar with the symptoms (which I had noticed recurred annually) , council either wilfully or stupidly denied, for many months, that the problem existed. I find that if one plods along with obsessional intent, fortune usually deals the odd good card. In this case I was sitting at a coffee bar when I overheard a middle aged man at another table telling the waitress, who had enquired about his holiday, that he had to cut short the vacation because there was a huge problem in the dams. Are yoiu Mr X , i asked. This was the geezer to whom I was told all enquiries had to be referred, who was never in his office. He confirmed my understanding of the situation - which I had studied on the net, knowing perhaps even less than our councillors about the supply of potable water. Why were they so ignorant, or were they deliberately misleading the public.... dont they use google? The point of this long rant (a testimonial of sorts, like much else on Facebook) is that I want to publicly announce that I wont be allowing myself to get involved in the upcoming struggle over ERF 81. The reported official statements are either ignorant or crazy. Yet there is a pattern, and it spells D-E-V-I-L-O-P-M-E-N-T. All that is required, urgently, is for the Public Works Department to fulfil their line function, which is to maintain the property. The roads , fencing , roofs and gutters have been allowed to rot, for more than two decades. That would be a good starting point for a reasonable conversation. But I will say nothing further. I hope that they dont throw me out before I can fulfil my obligation to deliver Shakespeares Chair to GIPCA in early September.
