First, an American drone was shot down over the Ukraine this past week. Shouldnt he have said a diplomatic resolution cannot be achieved while American military forces continue their incursions into Ukrainian territory? Second, there was a referendum, a vote, an election! When Texians chose to secede from Mexico and later become a part of the United States, was that not a diplomatic solution given the fact that American military forces had made incursions into Mexico during the deliberations? The United States has no national security interest whatsoever in the Ukraine. In fact, our real security interest is not to destabilize that region where major American energy companies are involved in exploration and development activities. I am not any particular fan of those companies and am not affiliated with them. Nevertheless, they are American citizens making American investments in that region. They are operating within Russia and have every reason to be wary of the political posturing of the Administration and of the elements within Congress (such as Senator McCain) who are stirring the pot for no reason other than political grandstanding. What possible right did Senator McCain have to go inside the Ukraine and urge domestic protesters to stand up to the democratically-elected government of Viktor Yanukovich? This situation is very troubling. The Texas-Mexico historical similarity makes it even more disturbing, because under the Monroe Doctrine, this Nation simply would not have tolerated interference by the rest of the world in our hemispheric affairs.
