Erick Garcia, Arizona, and Carlos Vargas, Staten Island, NY, both DREAMers of the DREAM Action Coalition, were announced the winners of the Hackaton organized by Facebook Founder Mark Zuckerberg. After 24 intense hours of coding and programming, the DRM Tech Team created an app called #UndocuLife, an interactive digital experience where people could go through the many and difficult experiences undocumented immigrants go through. Carlos and Erick joined 18 other DREAMers at the LinkedIn HQ in Mountain View. Zuckerberg said of the app This is one of the most impressive things I have seen in awhile. The DRM team will continue to work with tech giants in Silicon Valley to develop the app and use it to press for immigration reform. After the victory, Carlos Vargas said “We are all winners, most importantly, we all created tools to help our community. We could not have done it without the mentors, Facebook, LinkedIn, and FWD. What matters is not a win, but empowering our community and sharing our stories to the country.” “We believed in ourselves but also others like Mark Zuckerberg believed in us and you have to go against all odds specially when it comes to your family and community,” said Erick Garcia of his experience.
