Erin Andrews and Fox Sports pulled the oldest gag in the book. Find a twenty-something athlete whos all pumped up on adrenaline from an event in progress or just ended, stick a microphone in his face, and hope he says something that he might not otherwise have said. In motor racing--where the athletes are overwhelmingly white and access to athletes while the event is in progress is not as strictly controlled--it happens all the time. Nobody held a grudge for long if, say, David Coulthard said something stupid in an interview. To the extent that we use racially-charged language to condemn Richard Shermans actions, were falling for Foxs gag.
