Escapism, insensitivity and denial are conditions caused by - TopicsExpress

Escapism, insensitivity and denial are conditions caused by deliberately not seeing certain things. Blindness is involuntary. It is a physical condition; any extended usage in figurative sense is caused by social prejudice against this condition. So, in my view, the term blindness should be used to denote only that physical condition only, not in the sense of ignorance or willful disregard of certain situation. I would object to the use of blindness in the extended sense for the same reason as a woman should object to the use of the word seminal for foundational. In both the cases, the terms are prejudicial. The social change is not easy, but it has to start with our language I am not suggesting that XYZ (name substituted) is prejudiced, the problem is with the way language perpetuates certain stereotypes. And if we must end them, we will have to start with our everyday language use. Hope that makes sense. Lets not be blind to the impact language may have in social change. — via Tara Prakash, a comment post from somewhere. Noted. I am guilty, on many occasions, of not checking my language even though I am aware that language has the power to perpetuate stereotypes or be a tool of resistance. Constant engagement is there to resist such normalization, always endeavoring to do better :)
