Espace Louis Vuitton’s Fantasy Islands of Indonesian - TopicsExpress

Espace Louis Vuitton’s Fantasy Islands of Indonesian art Presented by Espace Louis Vuitton Singapore, this exhibition showcases the works of seven Indonesian artists at its Island Maison art gallery. One of the standout pieces is Heri Dono’s Angels Face the Future (featured above): a group of red caped figures stare straight ahead, looking more like sly jesters than benign angels. The pop-art sensibilities are more overt in some of the artworks: Eko Nugroho’s characters sport superhero masks while Erwin Windu Pranata’s bean-shaped Star Wars figurines look like the collectible toys coveted by fans. Take more than a passing glance at these artworks however, and you’ll notice the ironic gestures. Spot a rotting apple, next to the heap of dung in Pranata’s Play Animal Instinct – Shabby illustration, easily foreshadowing how an item like this piglet figurine will soon be discarded, once its novelty value wears off. At first sight, Hehe’s artworks (Bed Time Story Teller and Having Lunch While Waiting for You in Mushroom Field) look like dream-like scenes of pure escapism: characters float around freely, arms outstretched while smiling striped globes look on. But a sharper eye will spot more vacant stares than joyous smiles of glee. Make a trip down to the Louis Vuitton Island Maison to support the works of these regional artists. Even if you are unfamiliar with contemporary Indonesian art, this exhibition’s fantastical collection will make for a fun introduction. The Fantasy Islands exhibition will be held from now to June 1 at Louis Vuitton Island Maison, Marina Bay Sands, 2 Bayfront Ave, #B2-36. Opening hours: 10am to 11pm on Sundays to Thursdays, 10am to 12am from Fridays to Saturdays.
