Essential Jesus Day 89 Revelation 3:1-13 Our reading today addresses two different churches: Sardis and Philadelphia. To put it bluntly, Jesus didnt have much good to say about the church in Sardis...it looked good at a glance but a closer and deeper assessment revealed it was DEAD! Jesus says their works were not complete...they were involved in the church but were not totally committed! (maybe you remember the illustration of the half-hearted kamikaze pilot from Sunday!) The church in Philadelphia was highly commended by Jesus. They were facing persecution, they were few in number, they werent experiencing many material blessings, theyve turned the other cheek despite continued ridicule...and yet they have held on to the Word of God and did not deny His name! The message seems to be clear from the example of these two churches; those who honor God, He will honor. (I Sam.2:30) This principle remains true no matter what situation we find ourselves in!
