Ethics Article - 45 Date : 17.08.13 Ethics are good conducts expected from people . It is a set of moral written/unwritten rules devised by the society . This is a result of our existence in groups and having a very developed mind with awareness . Therefore it is imperative to have values and ethics (a set of written/unwritten rules of the society) created by the intellectuals/priests /philosophers/ Godmen/ Administrators for effective conduct in our life in a group . These rules go on changing during the passage of time depending on the social , political , economical and spiritual developments . The rich , mighty and the cunning try to indulge with these rules and bend it as per their unending needs/whims and fancy for their personal gains. The general ordinary public though believe on these rules half-heartedly , do not follow it at times and get punished by the society . It is very difficult to say what are ethical as everybody has their own mind , own desire , own perceptions and own interpretations on ethics . One person called G E Moore did a lot of work on ethics and wrote a book called Principia Ethica . He tried to define ethics and got more confused in the end than getting any definition and clarity . If we see the animal world we see that , a peacock eats a snake , a snake eats a frog , a frog eats a grasshopper , a grass hopper eats to another smaller insect and the list goes on . Whose act is ethical in this chain of events . Our mind will argue that we are humans , powerful , intelligent , master of the universe etc , so we should concentrate on humans only and our priority is first among all living beings . So we have the right to kill and eat each and every animal freely and it is ethical . We know that , we operate as per our mind and we are slave to it . The mind takes us to wherever it desires and we are not aware about it but we say that we are in full control or command. We also know that , our mind is the accumulation of our past experiences , conditioning , belief , perceptions and knowledge . If our actions are guided by our mind in a robotic way then what is the scope of ethics ? Is it not that we are beating around the bush and making undue claims. It is like you are blaming me and I am blaming you . It is like a father is blaming dowry while the marriage of his daughter and taking hefty dowry at the time of his son’s marriage without any difficulty . It means our desires guided by the mind is not in our control . We have also a body . It desires food , rest and lust like an animal . If these are not fulfilled at the right time and quantity it will rebel and try to get it by force unless controlled by the mind . Each one of us is unique and have a different mind . We are also not aware about the actions we do . Under these circumstances we do actions to fulfil our desires of the body and mind without awareness . Then how can we be aware about ethical rules framed by the society during carrying out of various actions ? Another aspect of the ethics is who will decide what is wrong or right . Every event in this universe works as per a law called cause and effect . So long as causes are present , the effects are bound to happen whether it is ethical or not . If we go deep inside the aspects of causes , our individual contribution is very small in comparison to the contribution made by other systems around us where we do not have any control. Therefore we will see that , our individual contributions to the events has very negligible role/effect in the outcome . Even that small contribution by us is done by our mind in a robotic way which we are not aware of . Therefore masters do their part sincerely and accept whole heartedly the outcome , irrespective of their gain or loss . The happenings in this universe are so complex that, it is impossible to devise the ideal rules (ethics) to lead life in an ideal way . Then the question may arise that , in such a case can anybody do any wrong things which is so called un-ethical ? This is a trap of the mind . Our real nature is blissfulness which we have forgotten or not aware at present due to ignorance cause by Karmic layers . Therefore we should do our karma in such a way that , the fruit is accepted wholeheartedly with full consciousness , thereby slowly and steadily the karmic layers are dissolved . If we do that , all actions of ours are ethical irrespective of the reactions of the society and their consequences . It has to be treated as an simple event out of many events happening in and around us . This will give sustainable happiness which is nothing but blissfulness . R.P.Rath Ahmedabad 9227233330
