Ethiopian-Somali Community in Stockholm holds a fund raising event for the Renaissance Dam Members of the Ethiopian-Somali Community in Stockholm held a successful fund raising event for the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) on May 30, 2014. The event was organized by the Ethiopian-Somali community in Sweden in collaboration with the Ethiopian Embassy in Stockholm. Ambassador Woinshet Tadesse, Ambassador of Ethiopia to Sweden and other Nordic Countries, told participants that Ethiopia’s plan to achieve the status of middle income country could only be realized through utilization of its natural resources. She briefed the gathering about the progress in construction of GERD, the performance of the Growth and Transformation plan, the achievement of Millennium Development Goals and other developments. She urged the participants to continue supporting the construction of GERD. Mr. Shamsudin Sh Ali, the Chairman of the Ethiopian Somali community in Sweden, noted the importance of GERD, and said developments in the Somali region during the last 20 years had greatly changed the lives of Ethiopian Somalis. Others said Somalis hadnt had an opportunity to play a role in the development of Ethiopia under past regimes when the region had been ignored for centuries but added “now its time for us to contribute our share to the development of the country.” The event, attended by more than 100 Ethiopian Somali community members raised around 1.2 million birr. The members of the Ethiopian Somali Community in Denmark, Ahrus, has also celebrated the 23rd anniversary of May 28 Victory Day (Ginbot 20) on May 31, 2014.
