Etiquette 101: Social Invites RSVP: In the context of social invitations, RSVP is a request for a response from the invited person or people. It is an initialism derived from the French phrase répondez sil vous plaît, meaning please respond. This is pretty much a no-brainer: You were invited to an event, and the invitation requests that you please reply with whether or not you will be attending. Its not rocket science. Its not an option. Its not a cool sounding phrase that people just dump at the bottom of an invite. Its the real deal yet sadly statistics show that only 10% of people invited to an event actually RSVP. Ive received invitations that make it exceptionally easy and convenient for people to RSVP. For instance, they give multiple ways to reply such as text, email, and via social networking sites. Yet when I arrived at the event, Ive heard the host complain about an unexpected number of guests and a shortage of food and beverages as a result of people who did not bother to RSVP. Then you have those handful of EXTRA rude people who not only show up without RSVPing, but they also bring uninvited guests and sometimes drama. This is not only unacceptable, but its also tacky and classless and every other derogatory adjective suggestive of a person with no social graces and very limited home training, as my Obachan would say. I dont host very many events but when I do, I plan only for the people who have RSVPd and anyone who takes it upon themselves to show up unannounced is turned away. Yes, I can be equally as rude.
