Eugene Hutz, gatherer of the tribe that is Gogol Bordello, is a rock star in the consummate manner of Iggy Pop, Mick Jagger, David Bowie, Prince, even Axl in the flower of youth combined the cant-stop-watching-even-when-its-not-pretty showmanship with an impressive musicianship buttressed by the skills of his band mates, particularly Sergei on the gypsy violin. And in this age of auto-tune occasionally broken up by chubby guys sitting down and yodeling while strumming mandolins (badly), he is a necessary shot of adrenaline for true music lovers who reluctantly grow more cynical each time they dare turn on the radio. But what I most appreciate about the Pied Piper of Hutzovenia is his Undestructible determination to bring as many people as he can together at every single show and drive himself and his band to the point of complete exhaustion just to tear through another reel of Baro Foro for the hundredth thousandth time, encouraging, no, demanding, a stronger pulse from every savage heart. In some most animalistic highs, sometimes I dive with my ribs open out from the stage onto the table full of glasses and bottles. Im pretty sure that if I would do it in silence, I would perhaps go straight to the hospital... With our music, and music that we popularize, we try to reach out and remind people that, when taken out of the hands of a parasite, music is still a great lead into a democratic atmosphere of chaos, where moments of great freedom and where great friends could be found. And that in the world of rapidly dissolving authentic cultures, soul-searching through the music is something that connects you with the most authentic thing there - your savage heart. --Eugene Hutz, Gogol Bordello Photos by John Shore.
