Eulogy for Dorothy Dare 06/06/1936 to 08/03/2013 Dorothy Ann Robinson was born June 6, 1936. The middle child of five sisters, the widow of Eugene R. Dare, mother of 3 daughters, at age 77 she stepped into eternal life on August 3, 2013. She left behind 3 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren as well as special memories which allows each of her daughters to proudly say “She is my mother”. Our mother was a coal miner’s daughter who called Barnesboro home and is alumni of Osceola Mills High School. She learned and shared lessons and values gained due to the Great Depression, the war years, and her mother’s examples set forth for five daughters: Janet, Geraldine, Dorothy, Ellen, and Nancy. She often shared stories of her mother’s great patience while doing what she had to do, tales of her father that make him sound in ways like our father, and stories of sisters which brought me to deem them to be the picture of typical American teenagers. A thrill of delight was found in mom’s telling of her great grandfather Woods Robinson marrying a Native American woman named Mountain. There was the moment in which she showed pride in her great grandfather upon learning he was a Civil War veteran who enlisted for a second time to preserve the integrity and union of this country. My mother taught us a pride in our Scott-Irish roots as well as our Native American heritage. Among other stories she often repeated my favorites, one of which was the practicing her singing and her sisters mercilessly laughing at her. There was the confession of while their father napped, she and her sisters put curlers his hair – a prank he did not discover until he joined his buddies at their favorite hangout that evening. Dorothy Robinson along with a close friend joined the Air Force to subsequently be stationed at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas. It was there she met Eugene Dare who was tall at 6 feet with awesome blue eyes. She said helped that he also was from Pennsylvania and owned beautiful blue eyes that got her to give more than a passing glance in his direction. In fact, he was handsome enough that she did her best to inspire him into going to Hollywood. Instead; they married, he chose to stay in the Air Force, and together they raised three daughters. As a mother, mom never believed the child should be the one to make sacrifices for the parent and so through hard years and good times she sacrificed her own needs and desires at every turn to give her girls the necessities and when possible - what we desired. No sacrifice was too small for her. Mom was an expert at creating beautiful rose gardens and crocheting. She was such an avid reader, we need only turn to her for a book or two. So, may I close by saying not one of us girls would have asked for a different mother. Instead, we remark on occasion that despite her own shortcomings – we would nominate our mother for sainthood. After all, she endured hardships most would wilt under and stood strong and determined no matter what came her way.
