Eurointelligence: January 30, 2014 «El Mundo newspaper editor ousted We would not normally report this as this subject is clearly outside our reservation but we believe that the dismissal of the editor of El Mundo is ultimately a political story. El Confidencial writes that Pedro J Ramírez has been ousted though he will remain at the publisher as an advisor. Superficially, his dismissal can be explained by the reported poor economic health of the paper, which has been losing circulation and revenue. However, we believe that Pedro J as hes widely known has lost his position due to pressure by the PP and the government. Pedro J has been a thorn in the eye of all Spanish governments since the 1980s, first at Diario 16 and then at El Mundo for the past 25 years. During the Zapatero years he seemed to dictate the agenda of the PP opposition along with other prominent journalists, but barely 10 months into Rajoys government he distanced himself from the PM and penned an editorial advocating replacing Rajoy with a technical government if he didnt manage to turn the Spanish economy around within a year. Then a year ago, El Mundo reported that the PP had paid its executives with envelopes of cash and then spent most of the rest of the year as a conduit for damaging revelations by former PP treasurer Luis Bárcenas. Then last November the government and PP send nobody to an event organised by El Mundo, which was seen as a sign of total breakdown of relations. According to El Diario two weeks ago, public administrations controlled by the PP had reduced or stopped their advertising in El Mundo, hurting the papers revenue, and rumours were flying that Pedro J would be out of the paper soon, as has happened. However, the rumour mill had predicted this dozens of times over the years.»
