European re-Settlement Training & Education for Prisoners PO-COUNS-BR-02 1 Egan’s 5 stage model of counselling There are many different types of counselling and they all have many practitioners and theorists who each use different approaches and models. Gerard Egan is a ‘humanistic’ people-centred counsellor and he describes a 5-stage model. (Later he refined this and developed a 3 stage–model!) However, we are going to use his 5-stage model because it is logical, comprehensive and simple to follow. Counselling is seen as person-centred, the needs of the individual are paramount, rather than problem-centred. Any counselling intervention is likely to pass through a variety of stages: 1. Establish a sound working relationship between individual and the helper. 2. Explore and clarify the nature of the individual’s dilemma, including hopes and wishes for the future. 3. Identify and explore the variety of the options available for the potential resolution of the dilemma. 4. Enable the individual to decide on the option that seems most appropriate. 5. Help the individual to identify and take the necessary action to put the decision into practice. There is no time frame for this.
