Eva Husted had the honor of sounding Taps today for Navy LT Douglas Stewart in Castle Rock, CO. Douglas Wallace Stewart passed away Tuesday morning, August 12, 2014, from natural causes. Doug was a professional photographer since 1979, as well as working in IT security for 20 years. He was also employed by Home Depot at the time of his death. A true lover of nature, Doug was completely at home in Colorado. He climbed its mountains, fished its streams, and hiked its trails. He was born in Walsenburg, and raised in Aurora. After he graduated from the University of Colorado in 1977 with a Bachelors Degree in Environmental, Populational, and Organismic Biology (EPOB), he worked for the Colorado Division of Wildlife, living in a tent on Mount Evans, tracking bighorn sheep, studying their behaviors, and documenting their population. After that brief stint in the wild, Doug joined Unirad as a production control planner. In February 1979, he married Judith Hyatt and moved to Boulder to allow her to complete her college degree. After Judith graduated, they moved to Houston, where Doug began turning his photography hobby into a profession. Over many years, Doug and Judith traveled extensively, going to Canada, England, Mexico, Brazil, and Peru, as well as Alaska, Hawaii, and many other states. Throughout their journeys, Doug documented their adventures on film, initially, and then digitally. He was the recipient of many photography awards, including the Denver Art Directors Gold and Bronze Awards in commercial photography as well as publication of his photos in national magazines. He was especially proud of a beautiful leaping salmon going up a small stream in the backwoods of Scotland that was bought and used many times, and was on the cover of Field & Stream. During this time, they were blessed with a wonderful son, Brett. There was never a closer bond between father and son than there was between Doug and Brett. Brett became his fishing, camping, and hiking buddy. They would have paintball battles and golf. Doug coached Bretts soccer and baseball teams, and took him and his buds out to play basketball and football. Doug even had some of Bretts friends ask if he would adopt them, because they wanted a dad like Doug. Doug dreamed of moving to Alaska and becoming a bush pilot with his own seaplane. He was a member of the experimental flight organization in Colorado and took part in bringing disadvantaged kids out to visit the airplanes to expose them to a broader view of the world. Above all else, Doug was a patriot. Although too young to serve in Vietnam, he nonetheless wanted to serve his country, so he entered the U.S. Naval Reserve and served in active duty for short periods of time. He retired from the Reserve as a Lieutenant, and continued to hold the U.S. Navy in high esteem. Words cannot express what a kind, caring, understanding, funny, great guy Doug was. He will always be remembered. obits.dignitymemorial/dignity-memorial/obituary.aspx?n=Douglas-Stewart&lc=4566&pid=172096890&mid=6084016&locale=en_US
