Evas Story Needless to say we were disappointed, but Jody was - TopicsExpress

Evas Story Needless to say we were disappointed, but Jody was truly heartbroken. Probably two weeks went by and we received a call from our social worker asking if we were still interested, again Jody told her yes. Eva’s social worker was in Wichita so we received a call from her asking when we could come and look at Eva’s packet, Jody wanted to go right away so we arranged to come down the following day. The night before and early that morning Wichita got hit pretty hard with snow and as we recalled government offices were closed because of the weather. We had already left home because it was about a 2 hour drive from home so the social worker was surprised when we got to the office and called her asking if we were going to meet today. Two ladies came in to assist us, they took us to the conference room and brought in Eva’s file. Her file was actually a stack of papers and folders about 12 to 14 inches tall then they brought in Eva’s biological families packet which was about 8 inches tall. As we started to read we were pretty overwhelmed with the information contained in the file. This is mostly just forms filled out from doctors and social worker and a lot of the information was repetitive. We learned that Eva was born at home by paramedics and then transported with her mother to the hospital. The following day Eva’s mother walked out of the hospital and left Eva. Eva’s mother was a drug user and she knew that the hospital would not allow her to take her home and she didn’t want any hassle from the state regarding her daughter. Since Eva’s mother used drug Eva was placed in ICU to clean her system of cocaine, she spent the next 10 days detoxing. Eva’s future foster mother was called during the 10 days and asked if she was ready to receive Eva in her home. Cecil was a very special lady and on accepted infants in her home so she was excited to have Eva join their family. Following the 10 days in ICU Eva went to live with Cecil’s family which at the time consisted of herself her husband Delbert adopted son Ralph and foster child Jasmine. It was a challenge for the family, Eva still required monitoring and naturally she spent a lot of time at the doctors. Early on Eva was diagnosed with cerebral palsy along with many developmental delay problems but she was with a dedicated foster family and she thrived. While we were looking through Eva’s files her social workers checked in with us to see how things were going. We told her everything was good but a lot of information. She asked if there was anything that we had read that possibly changed our mind on moving forward. We were a little shocked, there was a lot of information that painted a pretty bleak picture at times but we told her that we were fully committed to moving forward. She asked if we understood that we were not the first family selected and we told her yes but it didn’t matter to us. Then she asked if we knew what happened to the other families selected before us. We did know there was at least one family selected but we told her we didn’t know why they didn’t adopt Eva, she asked if wanted to hear the story, of course we said yes.
