Even Slate gets it right once in awhile. There was a time when ladies and gentlemen dressed to travel. That was a good thing, and for the life of me, I cannot fathom why we stopped. Today, instead of caring how we look, we look like we dont care. From the piece: When we dress well for travel, we are not only making ourselves look good; we’re also signaling that we are invested in making this shared experience pleasant for everyone around us. Think of it as a kind of sartorial social contract: Honor it and your minor efforts make transit a more pleasing activity; break it, and reveal your misanthropic narcissism to, quite literally, the world. What else to call putting one’s own base comforts above the comfort of all? A very literate and civil thing to say. While Im not insisting that men wear ties on an airplane, a decent respect to the opinions and aesthetics of others suggest that something better than pajama bottoms, a tee and flip-flops will take the edge of what otherwise is a creepy look in any public venue. Besides, you never know when there might be a crash or something that would cause you to render first aid, and that necktie make a perfect tourniquet. Or, if you crash in the jungle, a headband should you need to go Rambo. So, rather than look (and too often smell) like you just got up or came in from a hard day of performing agricultural stoop labor, give us a little polish, both generally and on your shoes.
