Even after holding high profiles such as the Union Home Ministry, he often mentions, during his addresses, names of local figures he has been associated with over his five-decade-long political career. He remembers them by their name and recounts special memories he has of those people. At 78, Mufti holds road shows in freezing weather at several places in a day and his energy levels never seem to plunge. His close aides say that ever since the election campaign began in the first week of November in the state, he has been leaving home at 8:30 am and gets back around 5 pm. “The gruelling travel and the speeches do not take an ounce of his energy away,” one of Mufti’s close confidants says, adding that he has also been flying to far-flung areas during his campaigning. Mufti has matured as a politician and every which way you look at his campaign, he gives a strong impression of a seasoned politician. During his speeches, he stresses that he is not after power and the Chief Minister’’s post.
