Even after watching them for many years some bird behavior - TopicsExpress

Even after watching them for many years some bird behavior continues to mystify me. This morning before sunrise, I heard a Swainsons hawk screaming in my yard. I went outside to investigate and the female hawk that built the nest that my resident GHOs subsequently stole from her was circling around the nest making the typical angry calls she emits when anyone approaches her nest or young. But in this case, nesting season is over and as far as I could see no one, including the owls was anywhere nearby. She stopped screaming when I came out and showed her disdain for me by producing a poopshoot in my direction before hopping down onto the nest. She left a little while later without making another sound. My neighbor heard the comotion too and asked what all the noise was about. My answer? I have no idea. This bird will be headed to South America for the winter in a couple of weeks. Maybe she was just letting the owls ( who stay in this area year round) know that they better not steal her nest again while she is away.
