Even after years of experience and practice I find that there are times that I have trouble listening. I had a long conversation with someone last night and found that we both wanted to interrupt each other and insert our thoughts rather than listen to the others full comment. I had to work at not jumping in too quickly. I had to focus on waiting until I was sure the other person was done speaking. If you have difficulty listening consider how you feel when others dont listen to you. Then, consider how you feel when someone has paid full attention to you and what you have to say. There should be a big difference between the two feelings. It can be the difference of feeling insignificant and the feeling of significance. We all, to one degree or another, want or need to feel significant. Here are a couple of tips for effective listening • Focus fully on your mate. • Avoid interrupting. • Avoid seeming judgmental. • Show your interest. If your goal is to fully understand and connect with another person, listen effectively. The more you practice, the more connected and rewarding your interactions with others will become.
