: Even as the state government has announced that the Shakti Mills gang rape case will be heard by a fast track court, experts opine that there is little difference between the time taken by "fast track courts" and other trial courts. The fast track courts were established under a Central government scheme to expedite criminal trials, especially in serious offences. The courts were also established to expeditiously dispose of long pending cases in the sessions Courts and long pending cases of undertrial prisoners. In Mumbai the sessions court in Sewri is the designated fast track court. However, the three courts that are currently functioning also hear other cases. "The court has a jurisdiction of about 20 police stations. Besides cases fast tracked by the state or the principal judge of the sessions court, the court hears all other matters," a court source said. The source also stated that there is no particular time limit allotted to the case and in all likelihood only important witnesses are examined to expedite the process.
