Even if we are graced with a normal span of life, I wonder (for myself at least) whether we spend the first two thirds making mistakes both of commission and omission, and the final third of our run trying to atone for them. I am in the final third. Many of you are on my “atone to” list. Allow me today to atone to our middle child Natalia, just turned 12. From her earliest moments, I was hard on her. FAR too hard. “Sit up straight. Speak clearly. That’s too difficult a song for you, work within your limits. You are better in math than THAT. Hold your pen right!” She was the kid whose name even relatives would forget. And she has been the absolute toughest of all of us. She entered contests without our knowing and won them. She taught herself to play instruments, to crochet, do card tricks, memorized historical documentaries and thankfully just went about making herself special all on her own. This is a song that has some meaning for her, and for most kids of her age. And yes, when she informed me of the song choice, I told her it was going to be too difficult for her. She showed me, once again.
