Even more support. Thank you to the Dartmouth Action Collective for this letter! The sit-in at Colgate University has recently come to the attention of the members of the Dartmouth Action Collective. We would like to offer our support and encouragement of the students resistance against systems of oppression at Colgate. Every student has the right to an educational experience that is not marred by inequality and a lack of inclusivity. We admire the Association of Critical Collegians (ACC) for publicly challenging these issues. These students are expanding their educational experience beyond the classroom to send a message to Colgate students, faculty, staff, administrators, and the rest of our nation about inequality and oppression. Sometimes, in the struggle for justice for students of all backgrounds, speaking out isn’t enough. We must transform critique into action and become passionate agents of change. By sitting in, the ACC is highlighting problems that are crucial for those whose voices are frequently silenced. This includes but is not limited to students from the working class, students of color, differently-abled students, and LGBTQIA students. Furthermore, members of the ACC are sacrificing extensive time, mental and emotional energy, personal comfort and physical resources to fight for values that they deeply believe in. Individual awareness of an issue is powerful, but it takes true bravery and commitment to subject ones thoughts and critiques to the public eye. The efforts of the Colgate protesters will benefit not only the universitys current students, but also future students who rightfully desire an inclusive and accepting college experience. Thus, we pledge our support and resources to the ACC, and stand by these students in their demands. After organizing a sit-in on our own campus, we are aware of the challenges of promoting justice in such a controversial way. Unlike sit-ins, oppression spans lifetimes, so we encourage you to continue resisting complacency outside of the Administration Building. Please care for yourselves and carry on in the face of bad press, hurtful comments, and great disappointment. Do not stop here- your resistance is part of a larger movement that will benefit Colgate students and many more. We at Dartmouth are committed to helping Colgate become a university that can not only tolerate, but nurture and constructively engage with students of all backgrounds. Love and solidarity, The Dartmouth Action Collective
