Even more vile bile from the RePUKElicans: Dear Eda, Today, I and several of my colleagues announced plans to repeal a new state death tax that could harm many Wisconsin farmers, seniors and their families. The state budget signed a month ago included several important changes to the laws giving the state power to collect money and property from families whose loved ones received Medicaid services when they were alive, including the power to file foreclosures on properties. The law changes received no public hearings. As a result, many of the new law’s unintended consequences are now just coming to light. Wisconsin attorneys who help people plan for their golden years say the estate recovery and divestment changes will have the effect of encouraging married seniors to get divorced or discouraging single older couples to not get married in the first place. The changes may also prevent farming families from passing their farm on to the next generation should the parents need long-term care in the future. This will cause significant financial hardship for farmers and seniors who’ve worked hard and played by the rules their entire lives, while producing virtually no savings for state taxpayers. The changes could force farmers and seniors all across Wisconsin into having to make terrible choices between their families and their financial security. It’s striking that not one person outside the Walker administration or even a single interest group ever stepped forward to advocate for these law changes when the legislature was taking up the state budget. This new law threatens the financial security of family farmers and creates a potential marriage penalty for seniors. It needs to be repealed now. Sincerely, JON RICHARDS State Representative Assembly District 19
