Even our schools – which should be safe havens for children to learn – are not protected from an increasingly militarized police presence that continues to put our communities in danger. Last month the Compton Unified School District board approved a policy that will allow campus police officers to keep semi-automatic AR-15 rifles in the trunks of their cars while they are working. The local police union defends the use of semi-automatic rifles for campus police stating: “If we encounter an active mass murderer on campus with a rifle or body armor, our officers may not adequately be prepared to stop that suspect… The rifles are designed for increased accuracy and use rifled ammunition than can pierce body armor.” In light of the ongoing police violence against the residents of Ferguson, MO, its clear that Black youth are facing more and more government-sanctioned environments of fear and unrest across the nation.
