The brain was still, so still it could hear the faintest noise and being still and so incapable of interfering, there was a movement which began from nowhere and went on, through the brain, into unknown depth where the word lost its meaning [EL CEREBRO ESTABA TRANQUILO, TAN TRANQUILO QUE PODÍA OÍR EL MÁS LEVE SONIDO, Y ESTANDO TRANQUILO Y POR LO TANTO INCAPAZ DE INTERFERIR, HABÍA UN MOVIMIENTO QUE EMPEZABA EN NINGUNA PARTE Y SEGUÍA, A TRAVÉS DEL CEREBRO, INTERNÁNDOSE EN LA HONDURA DESCONOCIDA DONDE LA PALABRA PERDÍA SU SIGNIFICADO]. It swept through the brain and went on beyond time and space [BARRIÓ EL CEREBRO Y SIGUIÓ MÁS ALLÁ DEL ESPACIOTIEMPO]. One is not describing a fantasy, a dream, an illusion but an actual fact which took place, but what took place is not the word or the description [NO SE ESTÁ DESCRIBIENDO UNA FANTASÍA, UN SUEÑO, UNA ILUSIÓN SINO UN HECHO REAL QUE TUVO LUGAR, PERO LO QUE TUVO LUGAR NO ES LA PALABRA O LA DESCRIPCIÓN]. There was a burning energy, a bursting immediate vitality and with it came this penetrating movement [HABÍA UNA ENERGÍA ARDIENTE, UNA ESTALLANTE VITALIDAD INMEDIATA, Y CON ELLA VENÍA ESTE MOVIMIENTO DE PENETRACIÓN]. It was like a tremendous wind, gathering strength and fury as it rushed along, destroying, purifying, leaving a vast emptiness [ERA COMO UN VIENTO TREMENDO QUE JUNTABA FUERZA Y FURIA A SU PASO ARROLLADOR, DESTRUYENDO, PURIFICANDO, DEJANDO UN VASTO VACÍO]. There was a complete awareness of the whole thing and there was great strength and beauty; not the strength and beauty that are put together but of something that was completely pure and incorruptible [HABÍA UNA CONCIENTIZACIÓN COMPLETA DE TODA LA COSA Y HABÍA GRAN FUERZA Y BELLEZA; NO LA FUERZA Y BELLEZA QUE SE COMPONEN SINO DE ALGO QUE ERA COMPLETAMENTE PURO E INCORRUPTIBLE]. It lasted by the watch ten minutes but it was something incalculable [DURÓ DIEZ MINUTOS POR RELOJ PERO ERA ALGO INCALCULABLE]. The sun arose amidst a glory of clouds, fantastically alive and deep in color [EL SOL SE ELEVÓ POR ENTRE UNA GLORIA DE NUBES, FANTÁSTICAMENTE VIVAS Y COLORIDAS]. The roar of the town had not begun yet and the pigeons and sparrows were out [EL BRAMIDO DE LA CIUDAD TODAVÍA NO HABÍA ARRANCADO Y LAS PALOMAS Y GORRIONES YA ANDABAN POR AHÍ]. How curiously shallow the brain is; however subtle and deep thought is, it’s nevertheless born of shallowness [ES CURIOSO LO CHATO (POCO PROFUNDO) QUE ES EL CEREBRO… POR SUTIL Y PROFUNDO QUE SEA EL PENSAMIENTO, NACE NO OBSTANTE DE LA CHATURA]. Thought is bound by time and time is petty; it’s this pettiness that perverts “seeing” [EL PENSAMIENTO ESTÁ ATADO AL TIEMPO Y EL TIEMPO ES BALADÍ; ES ESTA NATURALEZA BALADÍ LO QUE PERVIERTE EL “VER”]. Seeing is always instantaneous, as understanding, and the brain which is put together by time, prevents and also perverts seeing [LA VISIÓN (EL VER) SIEMPRE ES INSTANTÁNEA —COMO LA COMPRENSIÓN ( (EL) COMPRENDER)—]. Time and thought are inseparable; put an end to one, you put an end to the other [TIEMPO Y PENSAMIENTO SON INSEPARABLES; PONELE PUNTO FINAL A UNO Y LE PONÉS PUNTO FINAL AL OTRO]. Thought cannot be destroyed by will for will is thought in action [EL PENSAMIENTO NO PUEDE SER DESTRUIDO POR LA VOLUNTAD YA QUE LA VOLUNTAD ES PENSAMIENTO EN ACCIÓN]. Thought is one thing and the centre from which thought arises is another [EL PENSAMIENTO ES UNA COSA Y EL CENTRO DEL QUE SURGE EL PENSAMIENTO ES OTRA]. Without the word is there thought? This movement can be described by thought but it is not of thought [ESTE MOVIMIENTO PUEDE SER DESCRITO POR EL PENSAMIENTO PERO NO ES DEL PENSAMIENTO]. This movement comes into being when the brain is still but active, and thought can never search out this movement [ESTE MOVIMIENTO SE MANIFIESTA CUANDO EL CEREBRO ESTÁ TRANQUILO PERO ACTIVO, Y EL PENSAMIENTO NUNCA PUEDE DAR CON ESTE MOVIMIENTO]. Thought is memory and memory is accumulated responses and so thought is always conditioned however much it may imagine it is free [PENSAMIENTO ES MEMORIA Y MEMORIA ES RESPUESTAS ACUMULADAS, POR CONSIGUIENTE EL PENSAMIENTO SIEMPRE ES(TÁ) CONDICIONADO —POR MUCHO QUE IMAGINE SER LIBRE—]. Thought is mechanical, tied to the centre of its own knowledge [EL PENSAMIENTO ES MECÁNICO, ATADO (ANCLADO) AL CENTRO DE SU PROPIO CONOCIMIENTO]. The distance thought covers depends on knowledge and knowledge is always the remains of yesterday, of the movement that’s gone [LA DISTANCIA QUE EL PENSAMIENTO CUBRE DEPENDE DEL CONOCIMIENTO Y EL CONOCIMIENTO SIEMPRE ES LOS RESIDUOS DE(L) AYER, DEL MOVIMIENTO QUE YA FUE]. Thought can project itself into the future but it is tied to yesterday [EL PENSAMIENTO PUEDE PROYECTARSE A SÍ MISMO EN EL FUTURO PERO ESTÁ ATADO (ANCLADO) AL AYER]. Thought builds its own prison and lives in it, whether it’s in the future or in the past, gilded or plain [EL PENSAMIENTO CONSTRUYE SU PROPIA PRISIÓN Y VIVE EN ELLA —DA LO MISMO QUE SE EMPLACE EN EL FUTURO O EN EL PASADO, QUE SEA DE ORO O DEL MÁS MODESTO DE LOS MATERIALES—]. It cannot wear itself out [NO PUEDE DESGASTARSE A SÍ MISMA]. Thought can refine itself, control its wanderings; can choose its own direction and conform to environment [EL PENSAMIENTO PUEDE REFINARSE A SÍ MISMO, CONTROLAR SUS DIVAGACIONES; PUEDE ELEGIR SU PROPIA DIRECCIÓN (RUMBO) Y CONFORMARSE AL ENTORNO (AMBIENTE) ]. Thought cannot go beyond itself; it may function in narrow or wide fields but it will always be within the limitations of memory and memory is always limited [EL PENSAMIENTO NO PUEDE IR MÁS ALLÁ DE SÍ MISMO; PUEDE FUNCIONAR EN CAMPOS ESTRECHOS O AMPLIOS PERO ESTARÁ SIEMPRE CONFINADO A LAS LIMITACIONES DE LA MEMORIA, Y LA MEMORIA SIEMPRE ES LIMITADA].
