Even though Im spending it alone, this has been the most spiritually rewarding Christmas of my life, because Ive been able to relive some truly exceptional memories and Ive had a wild ride so far. My first violin lesson... I was four, my teacher was Louis Margitza, concertmaster of the orchestra my grandma put together to keep Hungarian culture alive. Most of my relatives got shot up in Budapest in 56 killing tanks with mltv cocktails and skipping in and out of detention. I was born in 60. The studio where I learned to play the violin was somewhere in the inner city of Detroit on a bustling live/work/play street where shopowners would live above their places of business. It was clean, and to a little kid of 4, this was exactly like what I saw on TV such as William Powell and Myrna Loys Thin Man series and the film noir genre that flourished at the time. Back then, it wasnt retro and I was in the middle of it. Cool stuff. Mom would park somewhere on the street, then wed walk past all the suits and hats to a massive wood door that had a list of names to the right then ring a buzzer to wait to explain ourselves. gotta go empty the dog... more later
