Even though the tactical lessons are mostly irrelevant, the principles learnt are priceless. The political nature of war; the trust, alignment, and autonomy of your command team; and to be able to see, sense, and decide faster than your enemy - these are timeless lessons for today as they were in 1863. One other thing that struck me was the romance of the Civil War.. As a soldier, it was hard not to feel emotional about the bonds they forged and the lives they lost. Here, was the final glory of Lee and Stonewall Jackson, a leader-subordinate relationship that transcended authority, where one knew exactly what the other wanted and was able to execute and deliver with brilliance. Their best moment was their last. As Jackson fell, Lee said that Jackson has lost his left arm, but I have lost my right.
