Even though the world is progressing in some ways - there is still so much prejudice towards the GLBTI community - because of the nature of Brighton, people assume in a first world country and in the so called gay capital, that homophobia wouldnt happen here - Yesterday in Sainsburys (a popular supermarket), a young woman kissed her gf on the cheek and was told by a security guard that another customer had found this disgusting and that if they were to continue to show public affection they should leave - now personally Im not one for quite raunchy public displays of affection, but you have an option to ignore it - however an affectionate kiss on the cheek? The issue with GLBTI rights is essentially black and white on a piece of paper but is not something that seems to have really taken in the minds and hearts of people - you have this piece of paper now but please dont make it obvious? I wish I had my South African community with me to meet at the kiss-in at Sainsburys tommorow evening. Personally even in England i am afraid to be obvious with my wife - besides feeling like a zoo animal sometimes - the way leery men can stare - its just easier to be invisible and sometimes i literally feel like Im putting myself in danger - in SA sure (more my wife than me tho) - but here too, something that is so natural and unconscious has to be managed - it affects your psyche in a big way
