According to defence officials acting on a specific information, a joint team of Rashtriya Rifles and police personnel carried out an overnight search operation in highly dense Deolmarg forest on upper reaches of Pir Panjal mountains in the district and busted a militant hideout today. A huge cache of arms and ammunition that include UBGL, pistols, magazines, AK-47 rifle magazines, Chinese hand grenades, explosives and huge amount of AK-47 ammunition, binoculars and cameras were recovered. However, further details about the quantity recovered are awaited as the operation was still going on. The war like stores were found inside a natural cave which was about four feet deep and two feet wide and were detected with help of metal detectors and sniffer dogs. The cache was buried by local terrorists, who operated in the region a few years back, and was to be used to revive the militancy and against the security forces operating in the region . APSCC A Sikh organisation in Jammu and Kashmir has decided to launch a peaceful agitation in support of its demands which includes extending the National Minorities Act to the state. Chairman of the All Parties Sikh Coordination Committee (APSCC) Jagmohan Singh Raina told media that they have decided to launch a peaceful agitation in the name of Jammu and Kashmir Sikh Dharam Yudh Morcha in support of their demands. He claimed that they had several meetings with Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and former Law Minister Ali Mohammad Sagar in this regard but despite assurances that these things will be done, nothing has happened so far. FOODGRAINS The government has set a target of 259 million tonnes of foodgrain production for the year 2013-14. Official sources said, Centre is implementing various crop development programmes and schemes through states for achieving production targets of various crops such as Rice, Wheat, Pulses and Coarse Cereals. Programmes including National Food Security Mission and Bringing Green Revolution in Eastern India and Crop Diversification are being implemented to increase production and productivity of different field crops. Demonstration on high yielding varieties, distribution of seed of improved varieties, resource conservation techniques and cropping system based training are being taken up to achieve the target. D.C. PRASHANT Former Rajya Sabha member and veteran journalist D C Prashant died in Jammu today. Prashant, 96, is survived by three sons and four daughters. A veteran journalist, Prashant began his career with Associated Press of India before independence and worked with PTI later. Prashant was elected to the Rajya Sabha in 1982 as an independent candidate supported by a united opposition. He was one of the founder members of Dogri Sanstha and fought relentlessly for the inclusion of Dogri language in eighth schedule of the Indian Constitution. After the inclusion of Dogri language in eighth schedule, he campaigned for introduction of Dogri language in educational institutions up to post graduation level. He was associated with many social, cultural and religious organisations. ATTACK-KASHMIR Two pedestrians were injured when suspected militants opened fire at Awantipora police station, prompting security personnel to retaliate in Pulwama district today. According to officials, both the injured have been shifted to hospital and a hunt had been launched to nab the militants. The latest strike comes barely two days after militants shot dead two security personnel -- a policeman and a CRPF jawan -- and injured two others in separate attacks at Arwani in Anantnag and Almeira in Shopian district. JANMASHTAMI Shri Krishna Janmashtami is being celebrated across the country today, with traditional gaiety and religious fervour. The festival is celebrated to commemorate the Birth of Lord Krishna. In J&K, too Shri Krishna Janmashtami is being celebrated with great enthusiasm amid elaborate security arrangements in and around all the worship places especially the Shri Krishan Temples as well as all the sensitive places. Thousands of devotees throng the temples right from the morning. To celebrate the birth of the Lord Krishna, the city of temples Jammu is beautifully decorated. News about the Shri Krishna Janmashtami celebrations are also flowing in from all the districts. Our Poonch correspondent Darshan Bharti reports that Janmashtami, was celebrated with great devotion and enthusiasm in Poonch. A grand procession was a taken out where thousands of devotees participated. The main function was organized at Shri Geeta Bhawan Poonch. Processions were also organized at Surankote and Mendhar. According to Project director Yasir Arfat, an amount of about Rs. 7 crore would be spent on various developmental works which will be executed in the next seven years under this project. FOOD-STORAGE Consumer Affairs Minister, K.V. Thomas asked the State Governments to improve food storage facilities. In an interview he said, it is important to modernise the PDS to plug leakages. Mr. Thomas elaborated that 10 amendments were carried in the National Food Security Bill in the Lok Sabha and the Bill in the Rajya Sabha will go along with the amendments for the passage. Industries Stressing the need to invest big way in industrial sector in J&K, Political Secretary to Chief Minister, Tanvir Sadiq said that industrialization is the most powerful tool for massive economic development of the J&K State. Political Secretary was addressing at a day-long Session on Advantage Jammu & Kashmir, Enabling Business Environment & Projects for Investments, as part of INVEST North conclave organised by Confederation of Indian Industry in New Delhi yesterday. Mr Tanvir urged upon the ace players of industrial sector for investing in the hinterlands of the state to propel inclusive development.
