Evening Lecture at the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science: Two Uncommon “Worlds” of the Northern Tularosa Basin, South-Central New Mexico David W. Love, Ph.D. NM Bureau of Geology & Mineral Resources, New Mexico Institute of Mining & Technology Thursday, November 20, 2014 • 7:00 – 8:30 pm The floor of the northern Tularosa Basin, south of the Oscura Mountains and north of White Sands National Monument, consists of two very different geologic worlds. One world has been made of rock fragments eroded from the surrounding mountains; and one world is made of gypsum that precipitated from the evaporation of water and is responsible for the development of the White Sands. North of an ice-age lake that occupied the Tularosa Basin until about 15,000 years ago. North of the former lake, gypsum created an unusual surface of spring mounds, ponds, and marshes that are also home to unique flora and fauna. Explore with an expert these uncommon worlds in locations that most people never see. Dr. David Love is an environmental geologist for the New Mexico Bureau of Geology and Mineral Resources, a state agency that is a division of New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology. His interests range from applying geologic concepts to natural hazards and soil problems, to archaeological and paleontological sites, to basic bedrock geology, and to “recent” geologic history of New Mexico. He is a second generation geologist; both of his parents were eminent geologists. He earned a B.S. in archaeology and geology from Beloit College and M.S. and Ph.D. in geology from UNM.
