Evening doggie lovers, well I am so busy at the moment being - TopicsExpress

Evening doggie lovers, well I am so busy at the moment being inundated with dogs that are suffering all manner of skin issues. But today I had some slightly different cases including Bryce and Coco. Bryce is an (almost) 5 yr old Shepherd that started suffering seizures around 2 months ago. He is currently on medication for this but his owner is not happy about this and wants to try and work to get him off this and use a more natural approach. After a thorough history, it appears to me that Bryces seizures are most likely being caused by some underlying stress issues but he also has some general gut sensitivity and so I needed to adjust his diet. His owner had already started to do this moving him from a more dry kibble based diet to a natural homemade diet. However, he was still getting rice and a few other foods that were not suitable for him. As seizures can sometimes be caused by blood sugar imbalances, it is important that the dog in question be taken off high GI grains and sugars that may make this worse- basically this means all kibble based foods. In addition to a diet change, I have recommended some herbal tonics for both his seizures and stress issues, as well as a high dose of fatty acids and some gut immunity support. Fortunately he has not had a lot of chemical preparations for fleas, ticks heartworm etc but I did recommend that the owner avoid all of these as they are known to potentially cause seizures (among other things!). And then there was little Coco, a 5yr old Labraspoodle who has chronic kidney disease and was diagnosed at the age of 2 yrs. However, she had actually been very stable for the last few years up until a couple of months ago when a new puppy arrived on the scene. Coco has been getting into the puppys (commercial) food and this has (most likely) sent her blood work and urinary levels way out of balance and causing some more noticeable symptoms such as bad breath, excess drinking and some incontinence, some mild skin irritations (yeast based), low energy and decreased appetite. Coco had been on a vet prescribed science diet for her kidney disease but even her vet recommended maybe looking at a more natural approach. My aim for Coco is to help her gently (GENTLY) detox, completely change around her diet with a focus on raw organic low phosphorus proteins (yes, even dogs with kidney disease should not be protein restricted unless they are in end stage renal failure) with organic vegetables and some nutritional support. What better food to do this then The Complete Meal (thanks Jenny Golsby)- Coco is going to look to start on this over the coming days. In addition, I have made up herbal tonics for kidney, blood and liver support given in a cyclical pattern. Some omega 3 support and a high quality probiotic was also prescribed. I have also recommended that the owner avoid all chemical flea tick etc products as these are toxic to liver and kidneys. I will be catching up with Coco and Bryce before Christmas to check in on them!!!
