Eventful day. Was very quiet in cold tree stand until 9am. Then had 2 opportunity for turkey and missed both. They were very young turkey at 35 yards through load of brush. 1st shot clipped teig and veered off into tree and turkeys moved away and returned to same spot 20 mins later. Second shot went through the turkey legs.. not hurting it at all... used 30 yard pin... should have used the 40 as this one was a bit further away. So had opportunity and missed 2 turkey. Then a small doe comes down trail toward shooting lane. I turn and get ready when similar to yedterday, 4 point buck charges into area and stops... looks at tree. Yesterday I had 5 secs to shoot... so I drew back.. guessed 40 yards and shot. The deer was almost straight on.. slightly at angle and instead of hitting the shoulder / neck.. solid thud as hit it rihht in the head just below antlers.. and it bounded off up hill. 1. What should you do? Wait 3 hours then follow trail. 2.what didnt we do? The guide figured with the amount of blood on trail it would be dead already... so we followed it ip hill... big pools where he stopped.. then back down into a big wet thick swamp... where we lost the blood trail. 99% sure fatal shot... but pushed it into swamp where it is now coyote food. Bummed.... shot first wild buck and couldnt recover him for freezer. We did search hard but thick thy deep grass with load ruts and very wet ground. Will try a different spot tomorrow. . Which is last day of hunting for this trip.
