Eventually the Church becomes necessary to me. That will sound self-centered and impious to those whose piety turns upon such phrases as Holy Mother Church, but it is the more realistic way round. The Church becomes necessary to me because man is social and faith must be shared, or as I should prefer to put it, existence is always being-with-others. The expression self should not mislead us into thinking of the solitary individual, for authentic selfhood is possible only in a community of selves, and we have seen already that among the polarities to be held in tension are community and individuality.
