Ever learn why your jurisdiction isnt all that important? While Montana has a definite problem with its premium levels (recently moved to #8 from #1 in the Oregon Premium study), there isnt much unified interest in trying to realistically fix what ails the state...the big elephants in the corners if you will. Perhaps it is because Montana has less than 1% of all premium written in WC in the United States. According to Business Insurance, Net written workers comp premiums reached $41 billion in 2012, up 9.5% from $37.5 billion in 2011, the Oldwick, N.J.-based rating agency said in its workers comp “Segment Review” report. Meanwhile, workers comp insurers saw their combined ratio decline to 100.3% in 2012, down from 117.8% in 2011 and the first combined ratio decline for the U.S. comp industry since 2006. In Montana, even stretching it, the gross amount of written is less than $400 million. At the macro level, Montana is a bit off the radar for most national insurers.
