Ever notice how there are no atheists in the Bible? Unlike today, the people back then were at least smart enough to realize there were supernatural forces at work in their lives. So much so, that when kings were victorious in war, they figured it was because their gods were stronger than the gods of the people they defeated. In Numbers 22-24, one king realizes that Israels God is too strong for his idols, so he hires a well known sorcerer to try and cripple Yahwehs power with some potent curses. Bring on the black magic. For those of you who have heard of Balaams ass, or a story of a talking donkey--here it is in full. This is one of those accounts thats very tricky to interpret correctly because so much information is left out. But thanks to some comments God makes later on in the Bible, were able to piece together a basic picture of what happened when a king and a sorcerer teamed up to take down a God they didnt know.
