Ever noticed that when you point out an error in the facts or logic of someone, that such correction rarely changes their mind (or even makes them more obnoxious)? In a series of studies in 2005 and 2006, researchers at the University of Michigan found that when misinformed people, particularly political partisans, were exposed to corrected facts in news stories, they rarely changed their minds. In fact, they often became even more strongly set in their beliefs. Why does that occur? Because, “it’s absolutely threatening to admit you’re wrong. So, I am going to try to (a) admit more often that I am wrong, (b) acknowledge the limitations of my knowledge / experience, and (c) not let my insecurities perpetuate factually incorrect beliefs.
