Ever play that game where you see someone and try to make up a story to go along with them? For about 2 months I saw this kid everyday. He was walkin in my neighborhood around 630 every morning carrying two grocery bags. After much thought, I deduced he lived in the woods and only grocery shopped between the hours of 5 a.m. And 7 a.m.. I figured he was probably murdering people back there. Then he would go to the store and buy a bag of potatoes and carrots to mix in his humans stew. One day I had the courage to pull over and asked him if he needed a ride. I did not know if that would leave me to meet my own demise. I did it anyway. Turns out he walks nearly two miles to work every day. He lives off of Stony Brook and walks through our neighborhood on his way to work behind auto row off of Route 29. He was very gracious and thanked me over and over. Turns out Josh is a married guy with a 5 year old and a baby on the way. His wife is a stay at home mom. They have a car but they cannot afford insurance on it. I have picked him up close to a dozen times over the last month and every time he thanks me. It may mean I have to wake up 15 minutes earlier but as it gets colder I may offer to go pick him up and give him a ride. Moral of the story is to not judge a book by its cover and to always pick up hitchhikers.
