Ever since I was a child I have been obsessed with bats. Walking one morning, it was the lifeless body of a baby bat which is my first memory of the face of death. Swarms would fly over my backyard at sundown & I was so thrilled by this that one punishment for misbehavior was not being allowed to stand out and watch their flight. I just always thought they were freaking majestic. When living in Cairns I had the opportunity to help feed them at a sanctuary, I was absolutely blown away by how gentle, alert & delicate they are up close - carefully & precisely using their sharp spiked wing tip to take the fruit from my hand without stabbing me. No doubt about how conscious they were. And to see their mating ritual - where the male wraps his wings around the female to make a cocoon to canoodle in - cemented their species in my heart forever. Wake up humans - we SHARE this planet. Being at the top of the food chain does not give us the right to be selfish only the ability.
