Ever since moving to Monroe in 2008, I heard about what buildings - TopicsExpress

Ever since moving to Monroe in 2008, I heard about what buildings were lost, stories from days and times gone by, and met so many cool people who have stories of their own to tell. As the Monroe Museum is gaining momentum, the Historical Society of Walton County promotes the heritage and sites, the Historic Preservation Commission in Monroe promotes preservation and character of historic sites and districts in Monroe, Walton County celebrates 200 years in 2018, and the City of Monroe celebrates 200 years in 2021, a video oral history project like what was done for the City of Beverly Hills to celebrate 100 years in 2014 would be a fantastic idea to be done for Monroe and Walton County. While I was Director of the Monroe Art Guild (2009-2014), three shows were put together yearly during the month of May to promote Monroe/Walton Countys architecture, heritage, and past. I cant tell you how many times I wished I could have secretly recorded the stories I heard so that others later could hear the way the story was told- accents, inflections of words, and the passion of the tone of the person telling. I hope the video below serves to inspire someone to begin this project before the stories are lost forever. Monroe has a great number of colorful storytellers and even though I didnt grow up in the area or even state, I love learning from people and keeping those connections to our culture and heritage alive for others now and in the future to enjoy. We are all connected. I may be back in grad school now, but I still tell friends about what events are going on in Monroe/Walton or where to eat or shop. Wishing everyone a great start to the New Year! Always, Bryan vimeo/115014727
