Ever wonder where all our beautiful plants come from….in-part from the over 200 international field expeditions conducted by our botany team, i.e the Deherainia smaragdina was collected in Belize, 1997. At first glance, the Deherainia smaragdina may look like many other shrubs but closer reveals brown velvety stems and emerald green flowers. When in bloom (generally late spring)…the flowers exude an unusual odor…similar to a rather mature cheese. Many refer to it as the “stinky foot plant.” In nature, this unusual odor attracts flies to effect pollination. When we first brought it back from Belize, it didn’t grow much for five years, and then one day…it took off. Currently on display in the Fern Garden—come take a look! Team from botanical garden in Belize is HERE! Selby Gardens has formed a very unique collaboration with Caves Branch Botanical Gardens (CBBG) in Belize. To continue the mutually beneficial exchange of rare plants and scientific knowledge, three members of their team are in Sarasota visiting the gardens and tomorrow, Nov. 19 from Noon to 1pm, will give a presentation along with our Director of Botany, Bruce Holst--join us!
