Ever wonder why you might see several pieces of Fire Apparatus at motor vehicle crashes on the highway? Some of the most dangerous incidents that Firefighters respond to are motor vehicle crashes on limited access highways like interstate 93. Our current response policy for such incidents includes two Engine companies, one Medic unit and the Battalion Chief. The first arriving Engine and Medic unit go straight to the scene, to immediately stabilize, asses, and treat victims. The Battalion Chief assumes command and control of the incident, and the second arriving Engine will protect the first arriving crews by performing blocking. This is a very safe practice that has been adopted to prevent any of our members from being struck while work at these incidents.
