Ever wondered how much difference a bit of extra weight around the middle makes to your running times? There are many things that will affect your performance regarding weight, such as where its carried, what the weight is etc etc but heres a simple demonstration to highlight the effects! As you can see... a pretty big jump in heart rate again from around 125 bpm my heart rate was up to 155 ish with the 9kg. Then when I brought it down to about 5.5kg the heart rate was still in the 140s. I think I would have had to work hard to run a 4 hour marathon with the extra 9kg on. To a point... the less excess weight we carry around, the better for our performance. When I say excess, Im particularly meaning body fat, although if you run with a backpack often, considering the weight of items you carry can come in to play. Definitely ensure you have the essentials that you might need but lugging around heaps of water for example when there are regular points to refill could add up over a longer run to make a difference. Having massive amounts of muscle could indeed slow you down too although this is unlikely to be a problem right now. Depending on where you are at right now, just by making a few slight changes, whether that be to the kit you carry or the body composition you have at the moment, through making smarter food choices some of the time, will add up and help you finish your next race faster! The reason I bring it up is to highlight how much of a difference this could make to your running, Just think, if you could get a little leaner (obviously depending where youre at right now - we dont want anyone blowing away or falling to bits now!) and drop even 2 or 3 kg of body fat, make some small adjustments to your running technique (as in the last videos) it could be quite easy to shave a few minutes off your next marathon. Pretty cool right? If you think it makes sense and feel like you need some help drop me a message and we can have a chat, see if I could help you move forwards and go from there. Talk soon!
