Ever wondered how the animal keepers stay safe with Obie the rattlesnake? Our special “hot room” is designed to only allow specially trained keepers access to the animal. We have many special tools to handle him safely like the “Gentle Giant” tongs you see on the wall (NEVER with our hands!), well labeled safety lockup containers with special handles that can be used with tongs instead of hands, and dutch doors to allow a tool to reach in without exposing the keepers to the animal. But the coolest thing is his lockup box, the contraption under the towel. We have a gate that allows Obie access to that box without ever handling him at all! We open it--he slides in and we shut the gate so he is safely inside. We then can clean his cage without exposing ourselves to immediate danger. We sill use gloves in case he may have expressed venom n his cage somehow, but this way we are far safer!
