Ever wondered how we dry out smaller objects in the museum? We have a number of freeze dryers in our conservation workshop, including this huge one, which helps to dry artefacts by freezing the water within the wood structure, then removing the ice through vacuum sublimation, taking it from its solid form to a vapour without passing through a liquid state. Its all very complicated, but you cant deny we know how to Shiver our Timbers! Yes, that was all just for a International Talk Like a Pirate Day pun, but we hope it was informative!
