Ever wondered why roads at EVERY junction/signal in the suburbs of Mumbai, the COMMERCIAL CAPITAL, is damaged, broken and marked with potholes? Ever wondered why these don’t get fixed for years on end ? Ever wondered why the people ELECTED BY US don’t notice these bad roads ? I’ve tried to pen down a few of the less selfish reasons as to why NO MINISTER or CORPORATOR seems to be doing anything about this. 1. Damaged roads are “natural” speed breakers. The taxpayers hard earned money is saved because of these “naturally” occurring designs on the road. 2. Good roads will ensure faster dispersal of traffic which would reduce commute time and you may actually arrive at your destination on time. Arriving fashionably late and following the (in)famous IST is what we do best. Why would you want to reach early ? 3. Good roads can cause accidents since you will no longer be driving at less than 5kmph anymore and may run down bikers or pedestrians coming from the other signals of a junction. They obviously do not know when it is their turn to wait. At 5kmph, they have a chance to survive. 4. A lot less fuel would be required per vehicle on good roads since idling time would be reduced and people could maintain a constant speed. This would reduce the amount of imported petroleum and may affect the global economy and cause another recession. Also, spare a thought for the people of Iran who are dependent on us. 5. You would also spend lot less on vehicle maintenance and if your vehicles last longer, it would lead to a reduction in the sale of new cars. This might cause a lot of garages and motor companies shutting shop resulting in increase in unemployment in the motor industry. 6. Good roads would lead to a smoother ride which translates into less back pains and less mental frustration. This would result into less spending on medical bills to get your broken back fixed and anger management sessions. Again, this would mean an increase in unemployment of medical personnel. 7. Damaged roads provide employment to a number of people right from the workers, contractors, people in the BMC who authorise these contracts and ultimately some politicians. Would you really want to deprive all their kids of good schooling and other luxuries of life, all because YOU want to drive on GOOD roads? Like it or not, the damaged roads of Mumbai are here to stay and play an important part in circulating the tax payers money and keeping the Indian economy running. Hundreds of lives are dependent on such roads. So drive slow and think of the above points before complaining again. And if you are still complaining, its not the politicians but YOU who are selfish and YOU should be ashamed of your behaviour. - Claude Veigas
