Evergreen Aviation & Space Museum is home to the Oregon Aviation Hall of Honor, which annually inducts exceptional Oregonians for their outstanding contributions and achievements in the field of aviation and air power. The 12th Annual Oregon Aviation Hall of Honor Induction Ceremony is this Sunday, October 19th. Inductee: Major Richard Eckerson - Enlisting in the US Army in 1912, Richard Eckerson served in the Artillery and Quartermasters corps before going to OCS and being commissioned a Captain in 1917. He was sent to flight school at Kelley Field, TX, where he received his wings on March 1, 1918. After World War I, he remained as part of the Army Air Service Officer Reserve Corps, and was called to duty on several occasions. Eckerson flew barnstorming exhibitions and settled in Eugene, flying for Hobi Airways. In 1928 he opened a flying school in Springfield, OR and was a dealer for Waco Aircraft. He participated in the 1929 National Air Races and became a test pilot for Breese Aircraft, which built airplanes in Portland. On July 22, 1930, Eckerson took off on a cross-country to New York to demonstrate a new Breese monoplane. The aircraft, named “On To Oregon” developed a carbon monoxide leak which incapacitated Eckerson and caused him to crash. He died in 1933 from his injuries.
