Every Christmas season, there are TV showings of the many versions of Charles Dickens A Christmas Carol. This year I watched the original version and the 1951 movie. It is a marvelous story of the human redemption of a man named Scrooge who discovers near the end of his life the truth and joy of the Christmas message. The story features unforgettable characters, something one grows to expect in Dickens novels. I also read a fine biography of Charles Dickens by G. K. Chesterton. He refers to Dickens as an optimistic reformer who sees the good in men like Scrooge and shows how even poverty cannot dampen the Christmas spirit of the Cratchits. We owe much to our appreciation of the Christmas spirit these days to the writings of the 19th century author, Charles Dickens. May we celebrate the birth of our Lord and the many blessings God has given us on this special day. Merry Christmas!
